What is a personal year number?
It is the number numerology gives to the kind of year you are in. The tradition lines the years up in a cycle of nine. A 1 opens it, a 9 closes it, and the years between build, loosen, settle and wind down in a fixed order. Your life path number is the same for life. Your personal year changes every year and comes back around every ninth.
Because the formula uses only the day and month of your birthday, two people born on the same day of the year are in the same personal year at the same time, whatever year each was born. That is why this calculator never asks for your birth year.
How to work out your personal year number by hand
Take a birthday of November 29 and the year 2027.
- Day. 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.
- Month. November is 11, and 1 + 1 = 2.
- Year. 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.
- Add the three. 2 + 2 + 2 = 6.
That birthday is in a personal year 6 for 2027. If a total passes 9, reduce it again until one digit is left.
Reduce your day, reduce your month, add them and reduce again: call that your birthday total. For 2027 the year itself reduces to 2. Your personal year is then your birthday total plus 2. For 2026 the year reduces to 1, so add 1. Totals past 9 wrap round: 8 plus 2 is 10, which gives 1, and 9 plus 2 gives 2. In the example above the birthday total is 2 + 2 = 4, and 4 + 2 = 6.
You can also add all the digits of 11/29/2027 at once: 1 + 1 + 2 + 9 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 24, then 6. Same answer. Reducing to one digit gives the same result in any order, so calculators do not split on the arithmetic the way they do for the life path number. They split on two other things, below.
Calendar year or birthday to birthday: which one do we count?
Two methods are in use, and many sites do not say which one they follow. By the calendar-year method your year runs from January 1 to December 31 and the number changes at New Year. By the birthday method your year runs from one birthday to the next and the number changes on your birthday. The formula is identical. Only the year you put in differs. Astro-Seek, which publishes a free calculator, lists both, and the Almanac guide to 2026 tells readers to try both and see which fits.
We count by calendar year, because then everyone with the same birthday gets the same answer on the same day. Under your result the calculator also prints the birthday-method dates, so you can use either. The two only disagree between January 1 and your birthday: a calendar reader is already in this year’s number, a birthday reader is still in last year’s.
The second split is about 11 and 22. For about one birthday in ten the total lands on 11 or 22 before the last step (10.1% of dates in 2027, 10.7% in 2026). Some numerologists write such a year as 11/2 or 22/4 and read a trace of the master number into it. We show the single digit, because the nine-year cycle runs on nine numbers, and flag the total in the steps when it happens. The section on 11 and 22 has the details.
Universal year and personal year: what is the difference?
The universal year is the calendar year alone, reduced. 2026 gives 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, then 1. 2027 gives 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11, then 2. Numerologists who keep master numbers write 2027 as 11/2; we reduce it to 2, the same way we reduce personal years. Everyone shares the universal year. Your personal year is the same sum with your birth day and month added. That is why the shortcut above works: in 2027 every personal year is your birthday total plus the universal 2.
Personal year 11 and 22: do master numbers count?
Sources split. Numerologist.com states that master numbers are not kept in a personal year. The Almanac guide gives personal year 11 and 22 their own readings. We reduce, and the calculator marks the total when it lands on 11 or 22.
In 2027 and 2026 only one of the two can happen. Birth day and birth month each reduce to at most 9, so together they reach at most 18. Add 2 for 2027 or 1 for 2026 and the total stops at 20 or 19: an 11 is possible, a 22 is not. A 22 needs a year that reduces to 4 or more, such as 2029. If your total is 11 this year, you are in a 2 by our count and in an 11/2 by the other.
Which personal years do people get in 2027 and 2026?
We ran every date from January 1, 1930 to December 31, 2025, 35,064 days in all, through the formula for 2027 and for 2026. Each number comes out on roughly one date in nine, between 10.7% and 11.5%. A personal year is not rare. What changes between the two years is which numbers are slightly more common.
Solid bar and first figure: 2027. Thin bar and second figure: 2026. Shares of 35,064 birth dates, 1930–2025, counted as calendar days, not as people.
In 2027 the most common numbers are 5 and 7 and the least common are 1 and 3. In 2026 the picture sat one step lower: 4 and 6 led and 2 and 9 trailed.
Personal months: the same idea, twelve times
A personal month is your personal year plus the number of the calendar month, reduced to one digit. In a personal year 5, March is 5 + 3 = 8 and December is 5 + 12 = 17, then 8 again. The calculator above lists all twelve for the year you enter. Read a personal month as a smaller version of the year’s theme, not as a separate forecast.

Questions people ask
What year am I in?
In numerology the question means your personal year, and for 2027 it is your birthday total plus 2, reduced to one digit. A March 14 birthday gives 1 + 4 = 5 for the day and 3 for the month, so the total is 8, and 8 + 2 = 10, then 1: a personal year 1 in 2027. Once you enter your birthday, a line under the calculator also says which year you are in today, by the calendar method and by the birthday method, since the two differ between January 1 and your birthday.
What personal year am I in 2027?
Add 2 to your birthday total and reduce. Totals 1 to 7 give personal years 3 to 9, a total of 8 gives 1 and a total of 9 gives 2. For November 29 the total is 2 + 2 = 4, so 2027 is a personal year 6. The table further down lists the total for every number.
How do you work out your personal year number?
Reduce your birth day and your birth month to one digit each, reduce the year you want to one digit, add the three and reduce the total to one digit. The worked example above runs through it for November 29 in 2027.
What is my personal year number for 2026?
Find your birthday total, which is your reduced birth day plus your reduced birth month, reduced again, then add 1. A total of 9 becomes 1. The calculator at the top of the page does it from your day and month and prints each step.
What does personal year 5 in 2027 mean?
You are in a 5 in 2027 if your birthday total is 3. Numerology reads a 5 as the year of change, movement and loosened routines. The personal year 5 page covers the meaning, the months and who gets it in 2026 and 2027.
Does my personal year start on my birthday or on January 1?
Sources disagree. The calendar method starts it on January 1, the birthday method on your birthday. We use the calendar year and print the birthday-method dates under the result.
Do I need my birth year to find my personal year?
No. Only the day and month of birth go into the formula, together with the year you are asking about. Your birth year matters for your life path number, not for this one.
Is the personal year number the same as the life path number?
No. The life path number comes from your whole birth date and never changes. The personal year number comes from your birthday and the year in question, so it changes every year. Our life path calculator covers the first, and the numerology calculator shows both on one chart.
Which personal year is the best?
The tradition does not rank them. Each has a job: a 1 starts things, a 4 builds, a 9 clears out. A year is easier or harder depending on whether you are working with its job or against it.
Which birthdays give a personal year 4?
In 2027, a birthday total of 2. In 2026, a total of 3. The table above lists the total for every number.
What is the difference between a personal year and a universal year?
The universal year is the calendar year reduced to one digit, the same for everyone: 2 for 2027 and 1 for 2026. The personal year adds your birth day and month to it.
Can a personal year be an 11 or a 22?
Only if you keep master numbers. We reduce them to 2 and 4, as Numerologist.com does, and mark the total. In 2026 and 2027 an 11 is possible and a 22 is not.
How often does the same personal year come back?
Every nine years. A personal year 5 in 2027 returns in 2036, and one in 2026 returns in 2035.
