How to calculate your house number
Write down the number on your door, add the digits, and keep adding until one digit is left. Zeros add nothing, so 1004 and 14 are both 5.
- 1425 Maple Avenue. 1 + 4 + 2 + 5 = 12, then 1 + 2 = 3. A 3 home.
- Apartment 7C in that building. 7 + C. C is the third letter, so 7 + 3 = 10, then 1. The apartment is a 1, even though the building is a 3.
- 45-12 160th Street, Queens. The hyphen is not a minus. Add every digit: 4 + 5 + 1 + 2 = 12, then 3.
- 221 1/2 Elm Street. Leave the fraction out. 2 + 2 + 1 = 5.
- Unit 2601 on the 26th floor. Use the whole number on the door: 2 + 6 + 0 + 1 = 9. The floor is already inside it, so it is not added again.
Most numerologists leave out the street name and the ZIP code. Felicia Bender writes that the house number matters more than the name of the street, and Kari Samuels says you do not need the street name to find your number. The calculator adds the street only if you type it, and shows that total apart from your door number.
Looking for the houses of a birth chart? Those are the 12 astrological houses, a different thing from the number on your door.
Apartment number or building number: which one counts?
The apartment number. Felicia Bender, Kari Samuels and numerologist.com all say the number of your own unit is the one to read, because it is the door you walk through. Numerologist.com calls the building number "a secondary, shared influence that affects everyone in the complex".
Not every calculator works this way. Discover Numerology's address calculator adds the unit, the street number, the street name and the city into one "complete address" total. That is why two sites can give you two numbers for one apartment. Ours shows the unit as your number, then the building and the whole-address total beside it, so you can see all three.
In the example above, 1425 Maple Ave Apt 7C, the door is a 1, the building a 3, and everything typed together comes to 52, then 7.
House numbers with letters, hyphens and fractions
A letter counts by its place in the alphabet, starting again after I. That is the Pythagorean letter table, the one Felicia Bender, Kari Samuels and numerologist.com print for addresses. Bender's example is apartment 15A: 1 + 5 + 1 = 7. Samuels gives 31C: 3 + 1 + 3 = 7.
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A J S |
| 2 | B K T |
| 3 | C L U |
| 4 | D M V |
| 5 | E N W |
| 6 | F O X |
| 7 | G P Y |
| 8 | H Q Z |
| 9 | I R |
Hyphens, slashes and the # sign carry no value and are skipped. Queens is the place in the US where this comes up most: in New York City's address file, 35.2% of all address points carry a hyphenated number, and nearly all of them are in Queens. A fraction such as 1/2 is not counted by any source we checked, and the calculator tells you when it leaves one out.
What each house number means
These are the short readings most house-number sources share. The numbers describe what a home tends to make easy and what it makes harder. They do not decide what will happen to the people inside.
| No. | Read as | Harder for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Independence a home for starting out, working for yourself or living alone | compromise and shared decisions |
| 2 | Partnership a quiet home for couples, cooperation and slow, close friendships | big ambitions that need you away from home |
| 3 | Expression a social home for parties, creative work and conversation | budgets and finishing what you start |
| 4 | Foundation a steady home for putting down roots, saving and long projects | anyone who wants variety and surprise |
| 5 | Change a busy home with people coming and going, travel and change | settling down and keeping a routine |
| 6 | Care a family home for children, pets, relatives and looking after people | privacy, and people who need distance |
| 7 | Reflection a private home for study, rest and time alone | a busy social life |
| 8 | Results an ambitious home for career, business and money matters | rest and switching off |
| 9 | Completion an open home for hosting, helping others and finishing chapters | saving money and new beginnings |
The 6 is the one sources call the most welcoming. Numerologist.com calls it "probably the most universally welcoming house number", and Samuels tells readers in a 6 that they are "very lucky to live here". The 8 gets the most careful wording: it is read as a home for ambition and money, and Samuels warns of "big gains here as well as big losses".
Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 in an address
Sources split. Numerologist.com keeps 11 and 22 and reads 33 through its root, written 33/6. Bender writes separate readings for "Master 11" and "Master 22" homes. Some calculators reduce everything to one digit. We always show the single digit, because that is the number all of them agree on, and the result box marks the master total when your address passes through one.
Where sources do keep them, an 11 home (29, 47, 65 and so on) is read as a 2 with more sensitivity and inspiration in it, and more tension. A 22 home is read as a 4 built for large, practical projects. A 33 is read as a 6 whose care turns outward to a wider circle. The number 13 is sometimes called a master number in forum threads; numerology counts it among the karmic debt numbers instead, with 14, 16 and 19.
In real addresses 11 is far more common than 22. In our count 7.01% of address points pass through 11 on the way down, 2.21% through 22 and only 0.07% through 33. A 22 needs at least three digits (499, 589, 778), and a 33 needs four (6999 or 8988).
Lucky and unlucky house numbers
Western numerology has no unlucky house number. Numerologist.com says there is "no house number you need to avoid", and asks instead whether the number suits what you need right now. The one exception some writers make is the karmic debt group: Numerology.com suggests avoiding addresses that add up to 13, 14, 16 or 19 before they reduce.
The fear of 4 comes from somewhere else. In Cantonese the word for four sounds almost like the word for death, and some buildings in East Asia skip floors and room numbers with a 4 in them. The same tradition treats 8 as lucky because its word sounds like "prosper", and 9 as the number for "long-lasting". Those readings come mostly from how a number sounds in Chinese, while numerology works from the sum of the digits. When a site calls your number unlucky, check which of the two it is using.
As for 2026: no source we checked ties lucky house numbers to a calendar year. 2026 reduces to 1 as a universal year, which describes the year and has no bearing on your address. The personal year calculator works out what 2026 is for you.
What 3,822,759 US addresses add up to
We took the address-point files that seven US cities and counties publish as open data and reduced every house number in them. Each number from 1 to 9 came out between 11.02% and 11.18%. Whatever your number is, about one address in nine shares it.
On one side of a street the numbers usually rise by 2. In San Francisco the next door on the same side is +2 in 39.6% of cases, in Austin in 48.4%. So the next house on your side is most often two steps further round the nine, and the same house number comes back every 18 numbers on your side of the block.
Sources: open address-point data of New York City, Cook County IL, San Francisco, Austin, Pierce County WA, Boulder County CO and New Orleans, downloaded October 15, 2026; 3,822,759 points with a usable number. Counted per address point, not per household. Letters such as the B in 12B are stored in a separate field in these files and are not in the count.
Can you change your house number?
Not the official one, but some numerologists say you can shift its reading. Bender and numerologist.com suggest putting a small number on the inside of the front door: a 7 home plus a 5 inside makes 12, then 3. Kari Samuels says the opposite in her FAQ: "No, but you might enjoy seeing those numbers inside your house." We print both views. To see what a door number would do, type it after your house number in the calculator: 1425 with a 9 becomes 14259, which adds up to 21, then 3 again, because adding a 9 never changes the result.
House number and your life path number
Some writers match the two. JC Chaudhry publishes a table of which house numbers suit which birth numbers, without saying how it was built, and numerologist.com reads a mismatch as tension that "can actually be useful" rather than a reason to move. We do not rank pairs. If you want to read the two side by side, find your life path with the life path calculator and compare its keywords with the table above.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate my house number in numerology?
Add the digits of the number on your door and keep adding until one digit is left. 1425 is 1 + 4 + 2 + 5 = 12, then 3. Count letters by their place in the alphabet (A = 1, B = 2), starting again at J = 1.
How do I calculate an apartment number?
The same way, using the apartment number rather than the building number. Apartment 7C is 7 + 3 = 10, then 1. The building number is read as a shared background for everyone in the building.
What is the luckiest number for a house?
Numerology does not rank them. The 6 is the one sources call the most welcoming, the 8 the one they link to money and career, and the 9 the one they link to hosting and generosity. Which suits you depends on what you want the home for.
Which house number is not good?
None, in Western numerology. Some writers avoid addresses that add up to 13, 14, 16 or 19, the karmic debt numbers. The fear of 4 comes from Chinese, where four sounds like death.
Is 4 a good house number?
In numerology a 4 is read as a steady home for roots, savings and long projects, and as a little heavy for anyone who wants variety. It is called unlucky only in East Asian traditions, because of how the word sounds.
Is 3 a good number for a house?
For a social life, yes: a 3 is read as a home for guests, conversation and creative work. Sources warn it can make budgets and finishing things harder.
Do I include the street name?
Most sources say no. Bender and Samuels use only the number. Discover Numerology adds the street and the city into one total. The calculator shows that total separately if you type the street.
Is 13 a master number?
No. The master numbers are 11, 22 and 33. Thirteen belongs to the karmic debt numbers, together with 14, 16 and 19, and an address that adds up to 13 reduces to 4.
What about 11 and 22?
They are master numbers. Many numerologists keep them for an address that adds up to 11 or 22 before the last step and write it as 11/2 or 22/4. The calculator gives the single digit and marks the master total.
What are the lucky house numbers for 2026?
No source we checked ties lucky house numbers to a calendar year. 2026 is a universal year 1, which describes the year and has no bearing on addresses. Your own number for 2026 is your personal year.
Does the house number affect everyone who lives there?
In the tradition, yes, as a shared background. Each person's own numbers, such as the life path, are read on top of it, so two people in one home can feel it differently.

How we made this page
The Number Atlas editorial team wrote this page with the help of AI, and a person edited it. The method follows the address guides of Felicia Bender, Kari Samuels and numerologist.com, and we checked the calculator against their published examples (1704 to 3, 15A to 7, 31C to 7, 45C to 3). Every share on this page comes from our own count of the open address files named above. Found an error? Tell us.
