Life Path Number Calculator

Your life path number is the main number in numerology, worked out from your full date of birth. Reduce the month, the day and the year to single digits, add them, and reduce the total to a number from 1 to 9, or to the master numbers 11, 22 or 33. Enter your birth date to get yours with every step shown.

  3. Year 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 11
  4. 3 + 3 + 1 = 77

Adding all eight digits at once also gives 7, so every common calculator agrees on this date.

What is a life path number?

In Western numerology the life path is the number drawn from your birth date. It is read as the general direction of a life: the strengths a person keeps coming back to and the lessons that keep repeating. Of all the numbers in a chart it is the one most practitioners start with, because it needs nothing except a date.

It does not change. Your name can change and with it the numbers drawn from letters, but the birth date stays, so the life path stays too. Each number has a short name in the tradition, such as 1 the Leader or 7 the Seeker, and the table further down lists all twelve.

How to calculate your life path number by hand

Take a birth date of November 29, 1987, written 11 / 29 / 1987.

  1. Month. 11 is a master number, so it stays 11.
  2. Day. 2 + 9 = 11. Another master number, so it stays 11.
  3. Year. 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25, then 2 + 5 = 7.
  4. Add the three. 11 + 11 + 7 = 29, then 2 + 9 = 11.

The life path for that date is 11. Numerologists often write it as 29/11, keeping the sum before the last step, because that sum is said to add its own shade. If the total had been 38, the steps would be 3 + 8 = 11 and you would stop there too. Any other two-digit total keeps reducing until one digit is left.

That method, reducing the month, the day and the year separately, is the one most numerology references use, and it is the one our calculator follows. The reason given is that month, day and year each stand for a stretch of life in the tradition (youth, the working years and later life), so each is read on its own before they are combined.

It also keeps the karmic debt numbers visible. In numerology 13, 14, 16 and 19 are called karmic debt numbers when they appear as the sum before the last step. Take October 15, 1998: 1 + 6 + 9 = 16, then 7, so the date is read as 16/7. Adding all eight digits at once gives 34, then 7: the same life path, but the 16 never shows up.

Master numbers 11, 22 and 33, and why calculators disagree

There is a shortcut that many quick calculators take: add all eight digits of the date at once. For November 29, 1987 that gives 1 + 1 + 2 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 38, then 11, the same answer. Often the two methods agree. Not always.

We ran every date from January 1, 1930 to December 31, 2025, 35,064 days in all, through both methods. They gave different life path numbers for 12.8% of dates, roughly one person in eight. Every disagreement was about a master number: 11 against 2, 22 against 4, or 33 against 6. For 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 the two methods never differed.

The gap is widest for 33. Reducing month, day and year separately, 33 comes up on 0.8% of dates. Adding all digits at once, it comes up on 4.7%, about six times as often. If you have seen two sites call you a 33 and a 6, this is why. Our calculator shows both results whenever they differ, so you can see which one a site used.

So are you an 11 or a 2? Most numerologists would say both: the 11 is the higher octave of 2, and people with 11 are said to live through 2’s lessons on the way. If your date gives 11 by the method above, read the page for 11 first and the page for 2 second.

What 35,064 birth dates tell us

Without master numbers, every number from 1 to 9 would come up on almost exactly one day in nine, because a date’s digit sum mostly moves up by one from each day to the next and wraps around after 9. Master numbers take their share from 2, 4 and 6, which is why those three look less common below.

Solid bar: month, day and year reduced separately (our method). Thin bar: all eight digits added at once. Born 1930–2025, 35,064 dates. 33 by our method dropped from 1.0% of dates before 2000 to 0.3% after: one of the ways to reach 33 runs through a year whose digits add up to 22, such as 1966 or 1993, and no year from 2000 to 2025 does that.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate my life path number?

Reduce your birth month, day and year to one digit each, keeping 11, 22 and 33 as they are. Add the three results and reduce the total the same way. The worked example above walks through one date.

Why do different sites give me different life path numbers?

Because some add all eight digits at once while others reduce the month, day and year first. On our run of 35,064 dates the two methods disagreed 12.8% of the time, always over 11, 22 or 33.

Is 33 a real life path number?

Most numerologists accept it. It is rare by the standard method: 0.8% of dates from 1930 to 2025. Some numerologists do not use 33 at all and read those dates as 6.

Which life path number is the rarest?

33, then 22 (3.1%) and 2 (4.7%). Among the single digits, 2, 4 and 6 are less common only because master numbers take part of their dates.

Can my life path number change?

No. It comes from your birth date, which does not change. What changes year to year is your personal year number, which uses your birth month and day with the current year.

Is the life path the same as the destiny or expression number?

No. The life path comes from the birth date. The destiny, or expression, number comes from the letters of your full birth name. Some sites mix the terms, so check what a calculator asks for.

Do I need my birth time or place?

No. Numerology uses the date only. Time and place matter in astrology, not here.

The Number Atlas editorial team wrote this page with the help of AI, and a person edited it. The calculator follows the method most numerology references describe, and we checked it against worked examples those references publish, such as 2 / 27 / 1976 → 16/7 and 11 / 26 / 1972 → 20/2. Every figure comes from our own run of all 35,064 dates from 1930 to 2025. Found an error? Tell us.
