How to find your expression number
Replace each letter of your full birth name with its value from the table below, add the values within each name, and reduce each sum to one digit. Add those digits and reduce once more. The one exception: 11, 22 and 33 are master numbers and are not reduced.
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A J S |
| 2 | B K T |
| 3 | C L U |
| 4 | D M V |
| 5 | E N W |
| 6 | F O X |
| 7 | G P Y |
| 8 | H Q Z |
| 9 | I R |
This is the Pythagorean table, the default on worldnumerology.com, numerologist.com and seventhlifepath.com.
Take Emily Rose Parker, the name in the calculator. EMILY is 5 + 4 + 9 + 3 + 7 = 28, then 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. ROSE is 9 + 6 + 1 + 5 = 21, then 3. PARKER is 7 + 1 + 9 + 2 + 5 + 9 = 33, and 33 stays as it is. Now 1 + 3 + 33 = 37, then 3 + 7 = 10, then 1. Her expression number is 1.
Expression and destiny are two names for the same number. Hans Decoz's World Numerology site says "expression"; many other sites say "destiny". If a calculator asks for your destiny number, it wants this one. The destiny number calculator has a reading for each number and shows how the three counting methods differ.
How to find your soul urge number
Use the same table and the same steps, but add only the vowels: A, E, I, O and U, plus Y in some names. The result is also called the heart's desire number. Both labels point to one number.
For Emily Rose Parker the vowels are E, I, Y in EMILY (5 + 9 + 7 = 21, then 3), O and E in ROSE (6 + 5 = 11, a master number, so it stays) and A and E in PARKER (1 + 5 = 6). Then 3 + 11 + 6 = 20, which reduces to 2. Her soul urge number is 2.
In the tradition this is the number of what you want underneath what you do: the kind of life that feels right when nobody is watching. Numerologist.com ties it to vowels because vowels are the open sounds of speech. That is a traditional argument; nobody has measured it. The soul urge calculator has a longer reading for each number.
How to find your personality number
Add only the consonants. For Emily Rose Parker that is M and L in EMILY (4 + 3 = 7), R and S in ROSE (9 + 1 = 10, then 1) and P, R, K, R in PARKER (7 + 9 + 2 + 9 = 27, then 9). Then 7 + 1 + 9 = 17, which reduces to 8. Her personality number is 8.
Numerologists read it as the surface: the impression you give before people know you. It is the vowels and consonants of the same name split in two, so the soul urge and personality sums of each name always add up to its expression sum (21 + 7 = 28 for EMILY). Each personality number is read in full on the personality number calculator.
What each number means in each position
The numbers are the same 1 to 9 plus 11, 22 and 33 in all three places. What changes is the question: the expression number is read as what you are equipped to do, the soul urge as what you want, and the personality number as how you come across. These are the short traditional readings.
| No. | Expression | Soul urge | Personality |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | leading, starting things, working alone | independence and acting on your own ideas | confident, direct, self-reliant |
| 2 | cooperating, mediating, noticing detail | peace, closeness, a partner in things | gentle, tactful, easy to talk to |
| 3 | speaking, writing, entertaining | creating things and sharing the fun | sociable, witty, expressive |
| 4 | organizing, building, finishing practical work | order, security, something solid | steady, reliable, serious |
| 5 | adapting, selling, travelling, learning fast | freedom, variety, new experience | lively, curious, hard to pin down |
| 6 | caring, teaching, looking after a group | home, harmony, being needed | warm, responsible, approachable |
| 7 | analysing, researching, working out how things work | quiet, depth, time to think | reserved, thoughtful, a little mysterious |
| 8 | managing money and people, business | achievement, standing, results | capable, authoritative, polished |
| 9 | serving, giving, seeing the wider picture | helping and making a difference | generous, broad-minded, a bit detached |
| 11 | inspiring others, intuitive insight | understanding things and inspiring people | sensitive, idealistic, charismatic |
| 22 | turning large plans into real structures | building something that lasts | capable and grounded, with big ambitions |
| 33 | teaching and nurturing on a wide scale | serving with compassion | caring and selfless |

Name numerology chart: Pythagorean or Chaldean table
Use Pythagorean unless a numerologist has told you to use Chaldean. The Chaldean table gives letters the values 1 to 8 and has no letter worth 9, so the same name often lands on a different number. The Pythagorean table is in the first section.
| Value | Letters (Chaldean) |
|---|---|
| 1 | A I J Q Y |
| 2 | B K R |
| 3 | C G L S |
| 4 | D M T |
| 5 | E H N X |
| 6 | U V W |
| 7 | O Z |
| 8 | F P |
How often does the switch matter? We ran 102,771 first names from the US Social Security Administration's public baby-name files, born 1930 to 2025, through both tables. Weighted by how many babies got each name, the Chaldean table changes the expression number of 91.9% of them, the soul urge of 73.0% and the personality number of 80.3%. If a site gave you a different number from ours, the table is the first thing to check. The calculator above has a switch for it.
Is Y a vowel or a consonant?
It depends on the name, and numerologists do not agree on one rule. Numerologist.com counts Y as a vowel when it makes the vowel sound in a syllable, as in Bryn or Kylie, and as a consonant before a vowel, as in Yes or Maya. Our "auto" setting follows that idea with a simple test: Y is a consonant when a vowel sits right before or after it, and a vowel otherwise. Mary and Kylie get a vowel Y, Maya gets a consonant Y. It is a simplification, so the calculator lets you force either reading.
In the SSA data 20.5% of babies had a Y in their first name, and for every one of those names the soul urge and the personality number change with the choice. Emily Rose Parker shows how far: her soul urge is 2 with Y as a vowel, as above, and 22 with Y as a consonant (EMILY's vowels become E and I, 14, then 5; 5 + 11 + 6 = 22). The result box above prints both readings whenever your name has a Y.
Why calculators disagree: each name on its own, or all letters at once
Decoz's method, which we follow, reduces first, middle and last names separately and then adds the results. His site warns against adding all the letters in one string, because it can create master numbers that are not there or hide ones that are.
Emily Rose Parker is an example. Reduced name by name, her soul urge is 3 + 11 + 6 = 20, then 2. Adding all her vowels at once gives 21 + 11 + 6 = 38, then 3 + 8 = 11. Same name, soul urge 2 on one calculator and 11 on another. Our result box adds a note whenever the shortcut would give a different number. A name written as one word never shows this, because there is only one part to reduce.
Master numbers in a name: 11, 22 and 33
A name part that adds up to 11, 22 or 33 keeps that number, and so can the final total. A name that never hits one of them ends on 1 to 9. In our SSA run, 19.2% of births have a first name with an expression of 11, 22 or 33, and the soul urge reaches 11 for 9.1% of births but 22 for only 0.6%.
Some numerologists use 33 and some read it as 6. In its expression guide, Numerologist.com marks 11 and 22 as master numbers; Hans Decoz's expression FAQ names 11, 22 and 33. The calculator keeps all three and the result box tells you when a different rule would change your number.
Hidden passion and missing numbers
Under the three cards the calculator draws a 3 by 3 square of letter counts, the layout Hans Decoz uses. Each box shows how many letters of your full name have that value. In his system the value that appears most often is the hidden passion, and a value that does not appear at all is a karmic lesson. Decoz puts the average at two karmic lessons and says four or five are not unusual, nor is having none.
The square counts letters, so it ignores how the name was split into parts and where the vowels are. Under the Chaldean table the 9 box is greyed out because that table has no letter worth 9.
Name numbers and your life path
The life path number comes from your date of birth and the name numbers come from the letters, so they are separate readings. In the tradition they are read side by side: the life path as the road, the expression number as the equipment for it. If you do not have your life path yet, the life path calculator shows the steps for any date. The numerology calculator puts both sets on one chart, with the maturity number that joins them.
| Number | Comes from | Changes if you change your name? |
|---|---|---|
| Life path | Date of birth | No |
| Expression (destiny) | All letters of the full birth name | Yes |
| Soul urge (heart's desire) | Vowels | Yes |
| Personality | Consonants | Yes |
A date has no letters, so no name number can come from your date of birth. The life path is the number that does.
When your three numbers differ
Nothing says they should match. Traditional readings treat each position as its own question, so an expression of 1 next to a soul urge of 2 reads as a person equipped to lead whose own preference is closeness. The meanings table above has a line for every number in every position.
What 327.5 million first names add up to
Here is how the expression number falls across first names alone, Pythagorean table, Y by the auto rule, from the same SSA files. Full names are not in that data, so this is a picture of first names only.
Expression 3 and 7 are the most common (13.3% and 13.0%) and 2 is the rarest (4.6%). James and Mary both reduce to 3, John to 2, Michael and Robert to 33. A first name on its own lands on a master number 19.2% of the time, because 11, 22 and 33 are kept the moment a name part adds up to them.
The soul urge is lopsided. Soul urge 6 covers 22.2% of births and soul urge 1 another 16.7%, while 9 gets 3.3% and 4 gets 3.6%. Soul urge 22 is 0.6% of births and 33 is almost never reached. First names are short, and a short vowel list rarely adds up to those totals.
Source: US Social Security Administration, national baby names 1930–2025, male and female files combined. SSA leaves out a name in a given year when fewer than five babies received it. The counts are babies, so a common name weighs more than a rare one.
Questions people ask
How do I find my expression number?
Give every letter of your full birth name its value from the Pythagorean table (A = 1, B = 2 and so on up to I = 9, then the cycle starts again). Add the values in each name, reduce each sum to one digit unless it is 11, 22 or 33, add the results and reduce again. The worked example for Emily Rose Parker above shows each step.
How do I find my soul urge number?
Do the same sums with the vowels only: A, E, I, O, U and Y when it works as a vowel. Reduce each name, add the results and reduce again, keeping 11, 22 and 33. The calculator highlights the vowels it used.
Is the expression number the same as the destiny number?
Yes. Both names mean the number from all the letters of your full birth name. The soul urge number is also called the heart's desire number. Do not confuse any of these with the life path, which comes from your birth date.
Which name should I use, my birth name or the one I use now?
Most references use the name on the birth certificate for the main numbers. Some also work out a second set from the name you go by now, such as a married name, and read it as a secondary layer. Run both names through the calculator and compare.
Should I use my middle name?
If it is part of your full birth name, yes. Each name is reduced on its own, so a middle name adds one more part. Leave the field as it appears on your birth certificate, including a second middle name.
Why is my result different on another site?
Usually for one of five reasons: the Chaldean table instead of the Pythagorean one, a different rule for Y, all letters added at once instead of name by name, each name part reduced to one digit even when it adds up to 11, 22 or 33 (numerologist.com does this), or a different spelling of the name. Our calculator keeps 11, 22 and 33 at that step, and the result box prints the other answer whenever it differs. Compare each in the calculator above.
Does changing my name change my numbers?
In the tradition, yes: the expression, soul urge and personality numbers belong to the letters, so a new spelling gives new numbers. The life path does not change, because it comes from your birth date.
Do 11, 22 and 33 count in name numerology?
They do in most systems. A name part that adds up to 11, 22 or 33 keeps that number instead of being reduced, and a final total can land on one too. A few numerologists do not use 33 and read it as 6.
Is name numerology accurate?
It is a symbolic tradition with no measurement behind it, and nothing on this page predicts what will happen to you. What can be checked is the arithmetic, which is why we show every letter and every step.
What is my name number by date of birth?
There is no such number. Name numbers come from letters, and a date has none. The number that comes from your date of birth is the life path, and the life path calculator finds it.
Is there a lucky name, and can numerology tell me to change mine?
No. Nothing we can check says a spelling changes anyone's luck, so we do not tell people to change their names, though some sites sell lucky-name reports. If you want to see how a different spelling or a married name reads, run it through the calculator and compare the two sets of numbers.
What are hidden passion and karmic lessons?
In Hans Decoz's system, the hidden passion is the value that appears most often among the letters of your full name, and a karmic lesson is a value that does not appear at all. The letter-count square under the result shows both.
What is the difference between the Chaldean and Pythagorean name numbers?
They use different letter tables: Pythagorean runs A to I as 1 to 9 and repeats, while Chaldean uses 1 to 8 and has no 9. Both are old traditions and neither has been shown to be right. Use the switch in the calculator to see both for your name.

How we made this page
The Number Atlas editorial team wrote this page with the help of AI, and a person edited it. The calculator follows the method on Hans Decoz's World Numerology: each name reduced on its own, master numbers kept. We checked it against worked examples published by numerologist.com (David Michael Torres, soul urge 9) and seventhlifepath.com (Keanu Charles Reeves, name parts 7, 3 and 11), and against an independent recount of 1,800 first names in all four letter and Y settings. Every figure in the data section comes from our own run of the SSA files. Found an error? Tell us.
