Why does 143 mean I love you?
Pagers explain most of it. In the late 1980s and early 1990s many pagers could not show text at all, only digits, so people agreed on number codes: 911 for an emergency, 411 for information, 143 for I love you. Dictionary.com quotes a Gizmodo writer listing exactly those three as the standard ones in 2009.
An older story points to a lighthouse. Minots Ledge Light, off Cohasset and Scituate in Massachusetts, got a new lens on May 1, 1894, built so that its flashes spelled the light’s number: one flash, then four, then three. The National Park Service says someone later decided 1-4-3 stood for I love you, and the tower is still called the I Love You Light. Dictionary.com leaves it open whether the pager code grew from the lighthouse or appeared on its own later; we do too.
Fred Rogers made the code famous with children. On Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood he handed Mr. McFeely a note reading 143 and explained it on air, and Biography.com, quoting a 1998 Esquire profile, says he kept his weight at exactly 143 pounds for 30 years and saw the number on his scale as a gift. In 2019 Pennsylvania’s governor, Tom Wolf, proclaimed May 23, the 143rd day of the year, as 1-4-3 Day, a statewide day of kindness in his honor.
The code keeps coming back in pop culture. Stray Kids built their 2022 single Case 143 around it, Katy Perry called her 2024 album 143 and its reissue 1432, I love you too, and fans of the game OMORI know 143 as Mari’s number.
143 in a text: from a girl, a guy or a friend
In a text, the code is a shortcut. The person who sends it expects you to know it, and the tone comes from who they are to you. From someone you are dating it is a plain I love you, sometimes sent because typing the words feels like too much. From a friend, a sister or your mom it is affection without the weight. wikiHow even shows it tacked onto a favor, as in “Could you pick me up from the airport? 143.”
If you want to answer in kind, the same three digits work, and so does 1432. If you are not there yet, a heart or a plain “aw, thank you” works too, since a number code does not need a number back.
Number codes like 143
Most love codes follow the same rule, one digit per word. A few count something else or play on sound. Where the rule is letter counting or the phone keypad, we recomputed each code below from its phrase.
| Code | Means | How it is built |
|---|---|---|
| 143 | I love you | Letters per word: I 1, Love 4, You 3. |
| 1432 | I love you too | The reply to 143. The 2 stands for the word “too,” not for a letter count, which would give 1433. Katy Perry used it for her reissue. · wikiHow |
| 1437 | I love you forever | One more word on the end: forever has 7 letters. · wikiHow |
| 143 637 | I love you always and forever | Two codes in a row. 637 alone means always and forever. · Cyber Definitions |
| 14344 | I love you very much | Very and much add the 4 and the 4. · Cyber Definitions |
| 831 | I love you | A second way to say it: 8 letters, 3 words, 1 meaning. · wikiHow |
| 459 | I love you | The initials I, L and Y sit on the 4, 5 and 9 keys of a phone keypad. · Cyber Definitions |
| 224 | today, tomorrow, forever | 2day, 2morrow, 4ever; 143 224 is I love you today, tomorrow, forever. · Slang.net |
| 520 | I love you, in Chinese | Said aloud, wǔ èr líng sounds close to wǒ ài nǐ, “I love you” in Mandarin. · Wikipedia |
Google also suggests 143 and 281, 143 and 6259, and 5998. We found no dictionary or code list that gives 281 or 6259 a meaning, so we do not offer one; a site that does is guessing. 5998 appears in wikiHow’s list as “you’re my world,” but the letter rule does not produce it, so treat it as that one list’s entry only.

143 in numerology and its spiritual meaning
Numerology reads 143 by adding its digits: 1 + 4 + 3 = 8. Affinity Numerology, one of the few sites with a page on the number, takes the number as an 8 colored by its digits, with the 1 adding independence, the 4 method and the 3 self-expression. That is a long way from a love note. An 8 in numerology is about results, money and authority, so a numerologist reading the code sees ambition first.
- The code. 1 + 4 + 3 = 8. Number 8: achiever →
- The words. I 9, L 3, O 6, V 4, E 5, Y 7, O 6, U 3: 9 + 3 + 6 + 4 + 5 + 7 + 6 + 3 = 43, then 4 + 3 = 7. Number 7: seeker →
- The arithmetic. 143 = 11 × 13, one less than a gross (144).
The phrase gives a different answer from the code. Numerology turns words into numbers through letter values, and “I love you” comes to 43 in the Pythagorean chart, which reduces to 7, the number of the seeker. So the code says 8 and the words say 7. Neither number is what the code means. That comes from people, and numerology adds a second layer you can take or leave.
Is 143 an angel number? Angel-number writers will read any number you keep seeing. If 143 keeps turning up on clocks or receipts, the usual reading goes through its digits and its root 8. Our angel number decoder breaks down any number that way. No older tradition treats it as a sign. In the Bible, the closest thing is Psalm 143, “Hear my prayer, O LORD,” the last of the seven penitential psalms, which Christians have prayed as a group since at least the sixth century. On a 12-hour clock 143 shows as 1:43 twice a day; a 24-hour clock shows 01:43 and 13:43. Decode any number →

How we made this page
The Number Atlas editorial team wrote this page with the help of AI, and a person edited it. What the number means comes from the dictionaries, code lists, and news stories named in the text, which we read on October 24, 2026; where we found no source, as for 281, we say so. Every number on the page, from the letter counts to the keypad code, the root and the numerology of the phrase, is worked out by the same code that runs the tool, and the page does not build if a sum in the text or a code in the table stops matching. Numerology is a symbolic tradition and predicts nothing. A number code means what the people using it agree it means.
