The Tesla Record rates it “UNVERIFIABLE”: “No document has ever been produced for it.” It searched the full text of My Inventions, the memoir Tesla published in six parts in the Electrical Experimenter in 1919, and the 1894 collection of his lectures and articles for “magnificence” and “key to the universe”, and found no occurrences. A search of the Library of Congress newspaper archive for the opening words returned 0 results. Mental Floss says: “Historians have not found a definitive source for this quote.”
Where it came from is murky too. The Tesla Record found no date for the first appearance. Other writers have pointed to a blog post in 2009, comments on Flickr around 2010 and quote sites by 2013, and the site notes that none of those dates has been confirmed. Truth or Fiction found the line in memes in 2021, by which point TikTok tags for 369 and the 369 method had hundreds of millions of views.
The myth borrows from a real habit. In My Inventions Tesla describes compulsions he had: “All repeated acts or operations I performed had to be divisible by three and if I mist I felt impelled to do it all over again, even if it took hours.” He died on January 7, 1943, in room 3327 of the Hotel New Yorker, and 3327 = 3 × 1109. Stories that he walked around a block three times or used 18 napkins to clean his dishes are retold often, but the sources we read do not trace them to a first-hand account.
The 369 method, the song and the slang
The 369 method is a manifestation technique. You write a wish 3 times in the morning, 6 times in the afternoon and 9 times at night, usually for a set number of days. It spread on TikTok around 2020. Refinery29, which explained the method, says there is “no concrete evidence” that Tesla had anything to do with it; blogs credit a TikTok creator and tie it to the law-of-attraction teacher Abraham Hicks, but we could not find the original post. We found no study showing that the method works.
The slang meaning is older and has nothing to do with Tesla. “3-6-9, damn, she fine” is a line from “Get Low,” the 2003 hit by Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz featuring the Ying Yang Twins, and “369 meaning lil jon” is one of Google’s top suggestions. The line counts up in threes; it is not a code. Google also suggests “369 meaning cop” and “369 police code”; we found no dictionary, police source or news story that gives 369 such a meaning, so treat any answer you see as a guess.
