Number codes and what they mean
Each code has its own page with the dictionary, code list or law it comes from.
| Number | Means | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 143 | I love you | Letters per word. I = 1, love = 4, you = 3; a pager code from the 1990s, per Dictionary.com. |
| 369 | A Tesla quote with no source; a manifestation method; a Lil Jon line | Not a code. A quote credited to Tesla with no known source, the TikTok 369 method and a Lil Jon line. |
| 224 | Today, tomorrow, forever | Sound. 2day, 2morrow, 4ever: to-day, to-morrow, for-ever; often paired with 143 or 831. |
| 187 | Murder (slang, from California law) | Section of a law. Section 187 of the California Penal Code, which defines murder. |
| 67 | Nothing fixed: a meme, said "six-seven" | Digits said aloud. The six-seven meme from a 2024 drill song; Dictionary.com’s 2025 Word of the Year. |
| 831 | I love you | Letters, words, meaning. 8 letters, 3 words, 1 meaning: I love you. |
How number codes work
There is no single rule. Each of the six codes follows a different one.
| Kind | How it works | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Letters per word | Each digit is the number of letters in one word. | 143: I 1, love 4, you 3 = 143 |
| Letters, words, meaning | Total letters, then words, then 1 for one meaning. | 831: 8 letters, 3 words, 1 meaning = 831 |
| Sound | A digit stands for the sound a word starts with. | 224: to-day 2, to-morrow 2, for-ever 4 = 224 |
| Digits said aloud | The digits are said one by one, as a sound with no fixed meaning. | 67: six-seven = 67, and it means nothing on purpose |
| Section of a law | The number of the law that defines the act. | 187: California Penal Code, Section 187: murder |
| Not a code | A number with a quote, a method and a song attached; no digit stands for a word. | 369: a wish written 3, 6 and 9 times a day; a quote with no source |
The letter rule is the one you can test yourself: I miss you and I hate you also give 143, which is why the code only means I love you by agreement. The phone keypad gives a second version, 459, from the keys of I, L and Y. wikiHow lists more than 150 old pager codes, and its page on 143 adds 5998 for “you’re my world,” which follows no rule we could find.

Questions about number codes
What do number codes mean in texting?
Most stand for a short phrase. 143 is I love you, 1432 is I love you too, 637 is always and forever, and 224 is today, tomorrow, forever. A few are not phrases at all: 187 is slang for murder, and 67 is a meme with no fixed meaning.
What does 143 and 831 mean?
I love you, said twice. The first counts letters word by word, the second counts the whole phrase.
What does 143 637 mean?
I love you always and forever. 637 is built the same way as 143: always has 6 letters, and 3, forever 7.
What does 143 and 224 mean?
The second code says how long. 143 is I love you, and in 224 the 2, 2 and 4 are the first sounds of today, tomorrow and forever.
Which number means I love you?
143, the one Dictionary.com lists, from the pager years. 831 says it too, and so does 459, the keypad keys of I, L and Y; 1432 is the reply. Angel-number sites read 143 through its digits, which is their own reading.
What does 5998 mean in text?
wikiHow’s page on 143 lists it as “you’re my world.” Counting letters gives 525, not 5998, so it does not follow the 143 rule.
What does 143 and 281 mean?
No source we checked gives 281 a meaning: it is not in the dictionaries or the pager lists. A site that offers one is guessing.
What is 369 slang for?
Mostly the line “3-6-9, damn, she fine” from the 2003 song “Get Low.” The “key to the universe” quote credited to Tesla has no known source.
What does the number 187 mean?
Murder, in slang. The number is the section of California law that defines the crime; Dictionary.com names the 1992 rap single “Deep Cover” as one of the earliest uses it found.

How we made this page
The Number Atlas editorial team wrote this page with the help of AI, and a person edited it. Each meaning comes from the code’s own page, where the dictionaries, code lists and news stories are named; we read them on October 24, 2026. The examples and the tool run on the same code that checks those pages, and this page does not build if an example stops matching. Found an error? Tell us.
A number code means what the people using it agree it means. Numerology is a symbolic tradition and predicts nothing.
