What a numerology chart shows
A numerology chart is the full set of numbers worked out for one person. Calculators differ in how many they list. Hans Decoz's chart calculator on World Numerology lists many numbers, including cycles and pinnacles. Decoz names five core numbers: the life path, the birthday number, and the three name numbers (expression, soul urge and personality). Our chart has those five, plus the maturity number, karmic debt, karmic lessons and your personal year for 2027. It leaves out the long-term cycles, pinnacles and challenges.
The life path is the number most numerologists start with, and the one people mean when they ask for "their number". It needs only a date.
Numbers from your date of birth
A birth date alone gives four of the nine numbers. In the example chart, born November 29, 1987:
- Life path. Reduce month, day and year separately and add them: 11 + 11 + 7 = 29, then 2 + 9 = 11. Numerologists write this as 29/11: the sum before the last step, then the result. The full method, and why some sites get 2 here, is on the life path calculator.
- Birthday number. The day of the month, reduced: 29 becomes 2 + 9 = 11. Decoz counts it as a core number and reads it as one talent you bring with you. He also looks at the unreduced day, so a 15 and a 24 are not read the same, even though both reduce to 6. The birthday number calculator reads all 31 days.
- Personal year. Your birth month and day with the current year, reduced to one digit: for 2027 it is 2 + 2 + 2 = 6. It changes every year and runs in a nine-year cycle. Details are on the personal year calculator.
- Karmic debt in the date. A 13, 14, 16 or 19 in the life path sum, or a birthday on one of those days. This date has none.
Indian calculators in the same search results use other names. Sanatan Society's tool, for example, asks for a date only and returns a "psychic number" and a "destiny number". That destiny number is not the Western destiny number, which comes from the letters of your name. The same page notes that in Vedic numerology the day starts at dawn, so someone born after midnight but before sunrise counts the previous date.
Numbers from your name
Your full birth name gives three numbers. The expression number, which many sites call the destiny number, adds every letter. The soul urge, also called heart's desire, adds the vowels. The personality number adds the consonants. Each first, middle and last name is reduced on its own before the results are added, the method Decoz describes.
For Emily Rose Parker that gives expression 1, soul urge 2 and personality 8. The name numerology calculator shows every letter and step, and has a switch for the letter Y.
Use the name on your birth certificate, middle names included. Accents are dropped (é counts as E) and anything outside A to Z is skipped. A married name or nickname can be run as a second chart, and most numerologists read it as a secondary layer.
The maturity number
The maturity number is your life path plus your expression number, reduced. Decoz writes that it shows a goal that surfaces gradually around age 30 to 35 and grows stronger after that. For the example chart: life path 11 + expression 1 = 12, then 1 + 2 = 3.
If that sum lands on 11, 22 or 33, our calculator keeps it as a master number, the same rule we use everywhere else on the site. Decoz's maturity article says to reduce to a single digit, and the result box tells you when that would give a different answer.
Karmic debt and karmic lessons are not the same
The names are close, and calculators often list them next to each other, but they come from different places.
| Karmic debt | Karmic lessons | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | 13, 14, 16 or 19 in a sum before the last step | Values from 1 to 9 that no letter of your name has |
| Where it comes from | Life path, birthday, name numbers | The letter counts of your full name |
| How common | 34.26% of birth dates carry one in the life path or birthday | Decoz puts the average at two per name; none is not unusual |
| More | Karmic debt calculator | Letter counts on the name page |
Emily Rose Parker has no karmic debt and one karmic lesson, 8: her fifteen letters cover every value except 8. People often ask for "the 44 karmic lessons", but this method has no such list. The lessons are the missing values, so a Pythagorean chart has between none and eight of them.
Reading the chart as a whole
Nine numbers read one by one give you nine short descriptions. Numerologists also look at how they relate, and the calculator flags three patterns when they appear.
A number that repeats. Emily's life path and birthday are both 11, so that theme is read as stronger in her chart. Across our 35,064 dates, the life path equals the birthday number on 9.5% of birthdays.
A lesson that a core number covers. Her missing 8 is also her personality number. Decoz writes that a karmic lesson weighs less when its number shows up among the core numbers, so in her chart the 8 is missing from the letters but present among the core numbers.
Numbers that point different ways. Expression 1 reads as leading and working alone; soul urge 2 as wanting closeness and a partner. Traditional readings keep both and treat the pair as a tension to work with. Nothing says the numbers should agree.
What 35,064 birth dates show
We ran every date from January 1, 1930 to December 31, 2025 through the date half of the chart. Here is how often each life path comes up:
The birthday number is less even, because months have 28 to 31 days. Days 1, 10, 19 and 28 all reduce to 1, so a birthday number of 1 covers 13.1% of dates. Only days 2 and 20 give a 2, because 11 and 29 stay as the master number 11, so 2 gets just 6.6%.
For 2027, the personal years are spread almost evenly: from 10.7% to 11.5% of birth dates per number. On 75% of dates, the life path, birthday and 2027 personal year are three different numbers. A master number (11, 22 or 33) appears in the life path or birthday for 18.7%.
Born 1930 to 2025, 35,064 dates. Life path by the standard method (month, day and year reduced first, master numbers kept). Name numbers are not included, because a date range has no names; the first-name data is on the name numerology page.
Why calculators give you different numbers
If another site gave you a different chart, one of these is usually the reason:
- All digits at once. Some calculators add the eight digits of a date in one go. On our run that changes the life path on 12.8% of dates, always between 11 and 2, 22 and 4, or 33 and 6.
- All letters at once. The same shortcut on a name can create a master number or hide one.
- The letter Y. Counted as a vowel or a consonant, it moves the soul urge and personality numbers.
- The letter table. Pythagorean and Chaldean values differ (see below).
- Master numbers. Some sites reduce 11, 22 and 33 at every step, some keep them, and some keep them in the life path but not in maturity.
Our result box prints a note whenever one of these would change your answer.
Pythagorean or Chaldean numerology
The two systems give letters different values. Pythagorean runs A to I as 1 to 9 and starts again at J. Chaldean uses only 1 to 8 and has no letter worth 9. Pythagorean is the default on World Numerology, numerologist.com and seventhlifepath.com; several of the Indian calculators that rank for this search use Chaldean.
The switch changes only the name numbers, plus maturity and the karmic lessons that depend on them. Your date numbers stay the same. With Chaldean values Emily's expression becomes 6, her soul urge 7 and her karmic lesson 6. When we ran the US baby-name data through both tables, Chaldean changed the expression number for 91.9% of births. Neither system has been shown to be the right one; use the one your numerologist or teacher uses.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate my numerology chart?
Reduce your birth month, day and year to single digits and add them for the life path. Reduce the day alone for the birthday number. Give each letter of your full birth name its value, then add all letters for expression, vowels for soul urge and consonants for personality. Add life path and expression for maturity. The table under the calculator shows each sum for your own name and date.
What is the most important number in numerology?
The life path. It comes from your whole birth date, it never changes, and most numerologists read it first. The expression number from your name is usually named second.
Can I get my numerology chart from my date of birth only?
Partly. A date gives the life path, birthday number, personal year and any karmic debt in those. The expression, soul urge, personality, maturity and karmic lessons all need the letters of a name.
What is the luckiest number in numerology?
The method has none. Each number is read as a set of strengths and lessons, and no rule ranks one above another. Lucky-number lists online are each writer's own choice, and they disagree.
Is 7 a lucky birth date?
Not in Western numerology, which has no lucky dates. Someone born on the 7th has a birthday number of 7, read as a talent for analysis and research. About 9.9% of birth dates have that birthday number.
Is this a numerology reading, and is it free?
The calculator is free and shows every number with a one-line traditional meaning. A reading goes further: it puts those numbers into sentences about one person. Some sites sell readings of 50 pages or more. Each link in your chart opens our free page for that number.
What are the main types of numerology?
Western (Pythagorean) numerology, which this page uses; Chaldean numerology, with its own letter table; and Indian or Vedic numerology, which links numbers to planets and uses different names for the date numbers.
What is Donald Trump's life path number?
4, written 13/4. He was born June 14, 1946. The life path calculator shows the full sum, along with Elon Musk's and Barack Obama's.
Does numerology work?
Numerology is a symbolic tradition with no measurement behind it, and nothing on this page predicts what will happen to you. What can be checked is the arithmetic, which is why every sum on this page is visible. Many people use the numbers as prompts to think about themselves.
Which name should I use?
The full name on your birth certificate, middle names included. Run a married name or the name you go by as a second chart if you want to compare.

How we made this page
The Number Atlas editorial team wrote this page with the help of AI, and a person edited it. The calculator reuses the code of our life path, name, personal year and karmic debt calculators, so each number matches the page it links to. The maturity number follows Hans Decoz's definition; karmic lessons follow his letter-count square. We checked the example chart by hand and the date statistics against our earlier runs of the same 35,064 dates. Found an error? Tell us.
Numerology is a symbolic tradition. Read your chart as questions about yourself, and keep what fits.
