What is my arcana?
An arcana is one of the 22 major cards of tarot, numbered 1 to 22, and "your arcana" is the card a birth date points to. Two families of sites answer the question, and they mean different cards by it.
Destiny Matrix sites read a whole chart of numbers from your birth date. The simplest of them is the number of your birth day: born on the 9th, you have 9, The Hermit, at the left point of the chart. Days over 22 are reduced by adding the digits, so the 27th gives 2 + 7 = 9 as well. Some matrix sites call this point the portrait or the outer self. It is one point out of many, and the center of the chart carries more weight in a reading.
Tarot sites mean the birth card. The method most of them follow comes from the tarot author Mary K. Greer, who says she learned it from Angeles Arrien in 1977 and first wrote it up in the mid-1980s; her fullest version is the book Who Are You in the Tarot? (2011). It uses the whole date, so two people born on the 9th of different months usually get different birth cards.
If you came here from a Destiny Matrix chart, read the first card. If someone asked for your tarot birth card, read the second. The calculator shows both, and neither cancels the other.
How to calculate your arcana number by hand
Take February 27, 1990, the example in the calculator.
The Destiny Matrix way: the birth day
- Take the day. 27.
- Reduce it if it is over 22. 2 + 7 = 9, The Hermit. Days 1 to 22 stay as they are, so the 22nd keeps 22, The Fool.
The tarot birth card way: the whole date
- Add month, day and year as ordinary numbers. 2 + 27 + 1990 = 2019.
- Add the digits of the total. 2 + 0 + 1 + 9 = 12, The Hanged Man. Had the result been over 22, you would add its digits again.
- Reduce once more for the soul card. 1 + 2 = 3, The Empress. Greer calls the first card the personality card and the single digit the soul card.
One date can carry three cards. A total of 19 gives The Sun, then 1 + 9 = 10, Wheel of Fortune, then 1 + 0 = 1, The Magician. That chain comes up for 5 in 100 birth dates.
Why arcana calculators give different answers
If two sites show you two different cards, one of three things is usually behind it.
The way the date is added. Greer adds the month, the day and the year as three numbers. Many quick calculators add all eight digits one by one instead. For February 27, 1990 that gives 2 + 2 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 30, then 3, The Empress, not 12. We ran every date from 1930 to 2025 both ways, and the personality card differs for 44.4% of them. The soul card never changes, because adding digits in any grouping leaves the same remainder when you divide by 9. You can switch methods in the calculator and keep your date.
The number of The Fool. In printed decks The Fool usually carries 0 or no number at all. The Destiny Matrix counts it as 22, and Greer also places it as the 22nd major card. A site that treats 22 as 0, or reduces it to 4, will show something else for the same total.
8 and 11. The Destiny Matrix follows the Marseille order, where 8 is Justice and 11 is Strength. The Rider–Waite deck, common on English-language tarot sites, swaps the two. The number stays the same; only the card's name changes.
Your soul card is your life path number
Most arcana calculators leave this out. The soul card is your birth card reduced to one digit, and your life path number in Western numerology, reduced to one digit, comes from the same date by the same arithmetic. We checked all 35,064 dates from 1930 to 2025: the two match every time. A life path 11 is a soul card 2, a 22 is a 4, and a 33 is a 6.
So if you already know your life path number, you already know your soul card. What the birth card adds is the step before the last reduction. Two people with life path 3 can have The Empress, The Hanged Man or The World as a personality card, and the tarot tradition reads those three quite differently.
How common each arcana is
Birth cards are far from even. Across 35,064 dates from 1930 to 2025, 6, The Lovers, comes up most often, for about 10 in 100 people, followed by 7 and 5. 2, The High Priestess, comes up for about 1 in 100, and 1, The Magician, never comes up as a personality card at all: no total between 1932 and 2068, the range these dates produce, has digits that add up to 1. The Magician still appears as the third card of every 19.
The year of birth narrows the range even more. People born in any one decade can get only 12 to 16 of the 22 cards. Nobody born in the 2000s has a birth card from 16 to 22, and nobody born in the 1990s has one from 15 to 21, while for people born in the 1930s those high cards are the most common. The table below gives both shares for every arcana.
The birth-day arcana of the Destiny Matrix is spread more evenly. 3 to 11 each have two birth days leading to them (the 9th and the 27th both give 9), so they turn up for 5 to 7 in 100 people. 1, 2 and 12 to 22 have one day each and turn up for about 3 in 100.
Your arcana chart: one number or the whole matrix
An arcana chart usually means the full Destiny Matrix: an eight-pointed star of numbers built from the same birth date, with 15 key positions. Your birth-day arcana is the left point of that star. The center, the sum of the four outer points, is the number practitioners read first and often call the comfort zone, the energy you fall back on when nothing pushes you. The lower line holds the karmic tail, and two short branches hold the love and money lines.
For February 27, 1990 the center is 6, The Lovers, a different card from both the birth-day arcana and the birth card. A single number is therefore only a starting point for a reading. To see every position with the math, draw your full Destiny Matrix chart, and for the three numbers at the bottom, use the karmic tail calculator.
Your arcana of the year
Greer adds a year card that changes every year: your birth month and day plus the current year, reduced the same way. For a February 27 birthday, 2026 gives 2 + 27 + 2026 = 2055, then 12, The Hanged Man, and 2027 gives 13, Death. In the tarot tradition Death stands for an ending that makes room for something else, not for dying. Readers disagree on when the card changes: some count from one birthday to the next, and many sites switch on January 1. The Destiny Matrix has its own version on the age ring of the chart, which the full chart covers.

Questions people ask
How do I find my arcana?
Enter your birth date in the calculator. For the Destiny Matrix arcana, take your birth day and, if it is over 22, add its digits. For the tarot birth card, add month, day and year as three numbers, then add the digits of the total until you reach 22 or less.
Which arcana is 15?
15 is The Devil, the card of desire and attachment. In the Destiny Matrix it never lands in the center of a chart, and as a tarot birth card it comes up for only about 1 in 100 dates. Its full meaning covers love, money and the karmic tails it opens.
What arcana is 34?
None directly: there are only 22 major arcana, so any number over 22 is reduced by adding its digits. 34 becomes 3 + 4 = 7, The Chariot.
Is my arcana the same as my life path number?
Your soul card is. Reduced to one digit, the tarot birth card always equals your life path number reduced to one digit; we checked every date from 1930 to 2025. The personality card and the matrix birth-day arcana are separate numbers.
What is the comfort zone in the Destiny Matrix?
It is the center of the chart, the sum of the four outer points. Practitioners read it as the energy you fall back on when life asks nothing of you. It differs from your birth-day arcana: for February 27, 1990 the birth-day arcana is 9 and the center is 6.
Can my arcana change?
No. Both the birth-day arcana and the birth card come from your birth date. The year card changes every year, and the Destiny Matrix ties a different number to each stretch of the age ring.
Why is The Fool 22 and not 0?
Printed decks give The Fool 0 or no number. Number-based methods need it to count, so the Destiny Matrix puts it last, as 22, and Greer treats it as the 22nd major card. A site that uses 0 shows The Fool for the same date under a different number.
What year am I in the destiny matrix?
Two different things go by that name. On the matrix chart, the age ring runs from birth at the left point through 20 at the top, 40 on the right and 60 at the bottom, in steps of about a year and a quarter, and the number at your current age is read as the theme of those months. In tarot, the year card adds your birth month and day to the current year: for a February 27 birthday, 2027 gives 13, Death, read as a year of endings that clear room.
How do I figure out my destiny matrix?
Start from the birth date alone. The day, the month and the digit sum of the year become the left, top and right points; their sum is the bottom point; all four together give the center. The Destiny Matrix calculator draws all of it and prints every sum.
How many karmic tails are there?
26. The tail is three numbers at the bottom of the chart, and only 26 different codes come out of every birth date from 1930 to 2025. The karmic tail page explains why the number is so small.
Is the destiny matrix legit?
It is a consistent method, not a proven one. The arithmetic is fixed, so two calculators that follow it give the same cards for the same date. Nothing shows that the cards describe a person better than chance would, so we present them as a tradition to think with.
Does my arcana predict my future?
No. Both methods are symbolic traditions, so treat the card as a set of questions to ask yourself.

How we made this page
The Number Atlas editorial team wrote this page with the help of AI, and a person edited it. The matrix arithmetic follows Ladini's Destiny Matrix, the same formula as our chart calculator; the birth card follows Greer's method, and our results match the worked examples that tarot sites publish for it, such as April 13, 1975 → 21, The World. Every share on this page comes from our own run of all 35,064 birth dates from 1930 to 2025. Found an error? Tell us.
