What is a karmic tail?
In the Destiny Matrix, the system Natalia Ladini published in 2006, a birth date becomes a star of numbers from 1 to 22, each tied to a major arcana of tarot. The karmic tail sits at the bottom of that star, on the line that runs from point D up towards the center. The tradition reads it as unfinished business: habits, fears or talents you bring in, often told as a story from a past life. You do not have to believe in past lives to use it. Many people read the tail as a pattern they recognize in themselves and in their family.
How the karmic tail is calculated
Three steps, all with the same rule: when a sum is over 22, add its digits.
- Point D is the sum of the day point, the month and the year point. For March 3, 1990: 3 + 3 + 19 = 25, then 2 + 5 = 7.
- Next to the center. Add D and the center of the chart: 7 + 5 = 12.
- The middle number. Add D and that result: 7 + 12 = 19.
The tail is written from the number next to the center down to D: 12-19-7. Some calculators print it in the opposite order, 7-19-12; it is the same tail. One caution: reversing 18-9-9 gives 9-9-18, which is a different tail of its own, so check which order a site uses before comparing.
Why there are only 26 karmic tails
We ran every birth date from 1930 to 2025, 35,064 in all, through the method, and exactly 26 different codes came out. There is a reason it is so few. Adding the digits of a number never changes its remainder when you divide by 9. Point D has the same remainder as the day, month and year added together; the center has twice that remainder; and the number next to the center has three times it. So the first number of every tail is a multiple of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 or 21. That rule, plus the limited range of birth dates, leaves 26 combinations.
It also means that codes such as 2-6-15, 7-9-22 or 1-4-5, which appear on some websites, cannot come out of the standard method. If a calculator shows you one of those, it is using a different formula.
Your tail says something about your generation
Because the tail depends on the digits of the birth year, some tails rise and fall with the decades. 14 of the 26 are more than twice as common among people born in the 2020s as among those born in the 1930s, including 9-15-6, 3-7-22, 9-3-21, 6-8-20. 6-20-14, 3-13-10, 9-18-9 and 6-14-8 do not appear for anyone born in the 1930s, and 18-6-15 falls on just one day of that decade. The most common tail overall, 15-20-5, is less common than it was: 11.1% of those born in the 1930s, about 8% of those born since 2000. Two random people share the same tail about 6% of the time.

Questions people ask
Can I have more than one karmic tail?
No. A chart has one tail. Relatives often share one, which is why the calculator checks up to four dates.
Does my karmic tail change over time?
No. It comes from the birth date. What changes, in the tradition, is how you live it out.
Is a karmic tail always negative?
The names can sound grim, but practitioners read every tail as a lesson with a strength inside it: the Rebel’s energy can build, the Wizard’s knowledge can teach. No tail is a verdict.
Can I work off or close my karmic tail?
Practitioners talk about closing a tail by recognizing the pattern and choosing differently, again and again. It is described as ongoing work rather than a one-time ritual.
Why does another site show a different tail?
Usually because it reduces large sums by subtracting 22 instead of adding digits, or prints the code in reverse (watch 18-9-9 and 9-9-18, which are two different tails). A code whose first number is not a multiple of 3 cannot come from the standard method.
Is a karmic tail proof of past lives?
No. It is a symbolic reading. Past-life stories are how the tradition explains the pattern, and you can use the reading without taking them literally.
